Completed Sun Hat Pattern

Materials:

Lily Sugar and Cream Cotton (or other worsted weight cotton) in 2 colors (second color is optional)
Size 8 double pointed needles
Size 8 circular needles
Stitch Markers
Duct Tape
Thick (but pliable) wire

Note, hat is knit from top down. I started it on double pointed needles, and switched to circular needles when it was big enough (I will note my switch in the pattern). The reverse knit section at the base of the body of the hat is optional, if you choose not to do it, knit for an additional inch before beginning the brim.

Top of Hat:

Cast on 8 sts, 2 sts per needle

Rround 1: (and all odd rows until base of body/brim) Knit

R2: Y/O, K1, rep to end of row

R4: Y/O, K2, rep to end of row

R6: Y/O, K3, rep to end of row

R8: Y/O, K4, rep to end of row

Continue increasing in this fashion until you have 80 sts on needle (at this point switch to circular needles and place a marker before each yarn over). End on the knit row.

Body of Hat:

After knit row after reaching 80 sts, continue as follows:

Rr1: Y/O, K8, K2tog

R2: Knit

Continue for 4-5 inches or desired hat length. End on a knit row.

Base of Body of Hat (optional)

Knit with two strands (your primary color and contrast color). You have two options. One: Purl for 6-8 rows. Two: Turn work inside out and knit for 6-8 rows, and then turn work back to the right side. Cover this slightly messy uneven join with the pretty flower you are going to make in your contrasting color when you’re done. Guess what I did :)

Brim:

R1: Y/O, knit to marker, Y/O, knit to marker…continue until brim is desired width. I did not do a knit row every other row for the brim, just continued with the y/o each row. It makes a flatter rim.
When brim is desired width, do not cast off or break yarn. Run a wire through the sts on the circular needles and remove needle as you go (basically pass the stitches off knitwise onto the wire). Stretch brim as far as it will go and tape wire together at end, and crochet a scalloped (or straight) edging over the wire.
